Vol. 421 No. 9

Written Answers. - Fraud Complaint.

Michael Noonan

Question:

62 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Justice if the Garda Fraud Squad have received a complaint from a person (details supplied) which alleges fraud; if so, if they have investigated the complaint; if a file has been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions; whether a prosecution will follow; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is not the practice for the Minister for Justice to make statements to the House about the progress of individual Garda investigations except in singular instances where the circumstances of an investigation are so exceptional that such a course is deemed to be appropriate.

All I propose to say in this case is that I have been informed by the Garda authorities that a complaint was received by them in November last, and the matter is the subject of a Garda investigation which will be concluded as soon as possible. The Garda have also informed me that other matters referred to them by the complainant were the subject of a Garda investigation in 1990 and the complainant is aware of the outcome of that investigation.
