Vol. 514 No. 1

Written Answers. - Services for People with Disabilities.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

193 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if the needs of people with disability, who need accessible houses to live in and when visiting, are to be integrated with changes being proposed by his Department to deal with the housing crisis. [3735/00]

Part M of the building regulations will be amended to require that new houses commenced on or after 1 January 2001 will be visitable by people with disabilities.

The national development plan provides the framework for an integrated investment strategy to facilitate the provision of the estimated 500,000 houses required to meet demand over the next ten years and mandatory compliance with the building regulations will ensure that any of this new housing commenced on or after 1 January 2001 will be visitable by the disabled.
