Vol. 421 No. 9

Written Answers. - Garda Clerical Duties.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

64 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Justice if he will give details of the number of members of the Garda Síochána who are habitually involved in clerical duties; and whether he considers this excessive.

The Garda authorities inform me that there are approximately 600 gardaí employed in a full-time clerical capacity in designated clerical posts. Of course there are many other members of the Force who are regularly if not permanently engaged on clerical duties in non-designated indoor posts.

It appears to me that the number of gardaí working in offices is excessive and I believe that there is scope for further civilianisation in the Force. A review is being carried out at present by the Garda authorities to decide on the additional areas within the Force where civilians could be employed.

There are 585 civilian staff employed in the Garda Síochána at present which is the highest number ever. A further 105 civilian staff will be recruited this year and they will be assigned to posts which will release an equivalent number of gardaí for operational duties. I plan to increase significantly the numbers of civilians employed in the Force over the next few years.
