Vol. 422 No. 1

Written Answers. - Coillte Land Acquisition.

Frank Crowley

Question:

48 Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline the amount of land acquired by Coillte for (a) each of the years 1990 and 1991 and (b) up to 1 June 1992; and if, in view of these figures he agrees that Coillte are now no longer in the business of acquiring land for forestry purposes which they were established to do.

The acquisition of land is a day to day matter for Coillte Teoranta. Relevant details are contained in the company's annual report and accounts which are available in the Dáil Library for both 1990 and 1991. For the Deputy's information, Coillte Teoranta acquired 7,502 and 7,971 hectares of land in 1990 and 1991, respectively. In 1992, the land acquisition target is 6,890 hectares.

These levels of new land acquisition are sufficient to maintain the company's planting programme and carry on the business of forestry on a commercial basis which they were established to do.
