Vol. 422 No. 4

Written Answers. - Mayo Schools.

Enda Kenny

Question:

159 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the name, number and location of each one, two and three teacher schools in County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the proposals in the Green Paper in regard to these.

The information requested on the names and locations of schools is being collected and will be forwarded to the Deputy when it is available.

There are no proposals for the widespread closure of small schools. Amalgamation of primary schools has been taking place for many years on the basis of consensus and agreement. The Green Paper, which I remind the Deputy is a discussion document, clearly states that amalgamation of schools would continue to be considered in consultation with local interests. I want to have the need for the reorganisation of primary school facilities along with the many other substantial issues raised in the Green Paper fully and thoughtfully debated over the next six months.
