Vol. 423 No. 1

Written Answers. - Report on Telecom Affair.

Austin Currie

Question:

77 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will outline (a) when the inspectors report into the Telecom affair will be available to the Houses of the Oireachtas and (b) the total cost involved to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Inspector's Interim Report was placed in the Oireachtas Library and published on 31 July last. I would hope that the investigation can be completed and the Final Report prepared within the next couple of months but unfortunately I cannot be definitive on this timescale.

I understand that payments totalling IR£250,160.46 have been made to the Inspector to date. In addition, my Department has paid a further IR£84,414.93 to the Revenue Commissioners, i.e., Withholding Tax at 29 per cent. However, I should point out that a substantial proportion of these costs relate to litigation and are recoverable arising from court cases where costs were awarded in favour of the Inspector.
