Vol. 423 No. 8

Written Answers. - Tourism Jobs.

Richard Bruton

Question:

131 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications the total number of people at work in the tourism sector in each of the past five years; the method of compiling these figures; and the way in which they relate to classification in the annual labour market survey.

Estimates for employment sustained by tourism, for the years 1987 through 1991, are set out in the following table:

Tourism Jobs in '000s

1987

1988

1989

1990

1991

63

69

75

82

87

These estimates have been prepared using the internationally accepted Input-Output Analysis method which measures the level of employment stimulated by tourism expenditure in the different economic sectors, including commerce, hotels, restaurants, transport and other services, none of which are exclusively devoted to tourism. As tourism extends across a number of economic sectors it is not identified by the CSO as a separate sector in the economic activity classifications used for the annual Labour Force estimates.
