Vol. 424 No. 5

Written Answers. - Break-down of Law and Order.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Question:

77 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the serious break-down of law and order with youths congregating in the vicinity of the Jet Service Station on Grange Road, Baldoyle, Dublin 13, he will take all necessary steps to have this outbreak of vandalism curbed including the placing of Garda foot patrols in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I reject the allegation by the Deputy that there is a break-down of law and order in the area in question.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a number of complaints have been received at Howth Garda Station regarding youths loitering in the vicinity of the service station in question, but when the gardaí responded to the calls the youths had dispersed. I am also informed by the Garda authorities that there have been no reports of vandalism in this area. However a number of incidents involving burglary and larceny have taken place at the service station this year. I am further informed by the Garda authorities that the local gardaí have been instructed to give this area regular attention and to take whatever action is deemed appropriate for the prevention of crime in the area.
I might add that proposals for legislation to enhance Garda powers to deal with offences such as threatening or abusive behaviour in a public place, disorderly conduct, etc. is at an advanced stage of preparation in my Department at present.
