Vol. 424 No. 5

Written Answers. - Drug Abuse.

Bernard Allen

Question:

79 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice the proposals, if any, he has to tackle the hard drug abuse situation in Cork city.

It is assumed that in using the term "hard drug abuse" the Deputy is referring to heroin and morphine abuse.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there is no evidence to suggest that there is a problem of abuse of these drugs in Cork city and that the only evidence of the availability of such drugs in the area was the seizure this year of 28 morphine sulphate tablets, in relation to which a prosecution is pending before the courts.

The Garda authorities are, of course, alert to the dangers of this type of drug abuse. They are monitoring the situation very carefully in Cork city as elsewhere and will take whatever further measures may be appropriate to deal with the situation.
