Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing Statistics.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

235 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment the number of local authority houses built since the foundation of the State; the number which have been sold; and the number which remain in public ownership.

Some 260,000 dwellings have been provided by local authorities since the foundation of the State. Information about the number of houses sold under all tenant purchase schemes is not readily available in my Department. However, in the years 1970 to 1991, some 114,000 dwellings were sold to tenants by local authorities.

At 31 December, 1991, there were about 95,000 dwellings in local authority ownership.
