Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Kerry Oil Pollution.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

296 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Marine if he will ensure that Kerry County Council receive 100 per cent recoupment for the expenditure of £66,000 incurred in the spring of 1992 following an oil spillage off the Kerry coast-line which threatened a number of beaches.

Following the west coast oil pollution incident in question, this Department and the Department of the Environment agreed, with Government approval, to contribute to the costs of the clean-up operation mounted by Kerry County Council and other local authorities.

Most of the expenditure claimed, which in the case of Kerry County Council amounted to £56,483, was subsequently refunded to the local authorities under this joint arrangement.
