Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Survey on Water Levels.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

131 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Finance if the Office of Public Works will carry out a survey of water levels on Lough Melvin and river Drowes on the border between counties Donegal and Leitrim and particularly on the way in which these levels are affected by drainage from small rivers and streams in the catchment area.

The Drowes River flows north-west from Lough Melvin and enters Donegal Bay just west of Bundoran. This river is not included in the priority lists of catchments which comprise the arterial drainage programme and there are no plans at present to undertake a drainage scheme in the catchment. In these circumstances the question of a survey does not arise. Between 1969 and 1970 a minor scheme of works was carried out in conjunction with the Northern Ireland Drainage Authorities on the Kilcoo River, also known as the County River, which for part of its length forms the Border between Counties Leitrim and Fermanagh and flows into Lough Melvin at its south-eastern shore. These works have had no significant effect on lake levels.
