Vol. 426 No. 3

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Richard Bruton

Question:

89 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if she would consider relaxing the academic requirements for a higher education grant in respect of courses such as that in theatre studies in Trinity College, Dublin, where academic qualifications are by no means the most important element in deciding suitability for an acting career.

The operation of the higher education grants scheme is currently under review by my Department, in consultation with the local authorities, as part of the process of preparing the 1993 scheme.

The academic requirements will be considered as part of that review.

I would point out that under the existing grants scheme mature students who secure places to pursue approved courses are deemed to fulfil the academic attainment conditions.
