Vol. 426 No. 3

Written Answers. - Meetings in Primary Schools.

Ivor Callely

Question:

90 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education her policy in relation to the holding of meetings by local community groups in primary schools; if she received submissions on this matter; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I would wish to encourage schools to facilitate local community groups wishing to use their premises in so far as that is compatible with their purpose and functioning as schools.

During school hours, of course, primary schools must be used exclusively for the education of the pupils attending them.

Normally the use of schools outside school hours is a matter for the Board of Management. When allowing community groups to use a school, the Board must ensure that there is no disruption of school work, that adequate insurance cover applies and that any damage to school property be made good by those responsible for the activity.
