Written Answers. - Paper Supply.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

90 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Social Welfare the quantity of paper used, the quantity of recycled paper used and the quantities of post-consumer paper recycled by his Department.

My Department uses large volumes of paper in the form of claim forms, leaflets, certificates, instruments of payment and envelopes in the administration of the social welfare system. The main supplier is the Government Supplies Agency.

Almost £1.2 million is spent each year on stationery and office supplies, of which some 95 per cent would be paper and printed material.

Some 17 million envelopes and 1,570 boxes of toilet tissue made from recycled paper were ordered by my Department at an estimated cost of almost £280,000 in 1992.

In excess of 300 tonnes of paper was removed from my Department for recycling in 1922.
