Vol. 426 No. 6

Written Answers. - Loop Head (Clare) Radio Mast Proposal.

Donal Carey

Question:

106 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for the Marine if he will stop the proposal of Irish Lights to erect a Loran C radio mast (details supplied) at Loop Head, County Clare, so that the Environment Protection Agency can examine fully the claim that this development will have adverse effects on human and animal health of Corca Baiscin especially following the views expressed by officials of Clare County Council regarding planning exemptions.

As I advised the House last week, a public consultative process is under way with a view to addressing all concerns in relation to the Loran C proposal. The Commissioners of Irish Lights have undertaken to further address public health concerns in relation to the Loran C proposal by the commissioning, as necessary, of additional independent advice. The county council and the local community will be kept informed of the results of all such investigations.

The Environment Protection Agency is not up and running as yet but I would be glad to consider any other suggestions which the Deputy might have as to bodies or agencies whose advice could be sought in the matter.
