Vol. 426 No. 6

Written Answers. - Proposed Interpretative Centres.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

144 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if the Office of Public Works intends to implement its plans to build interpretative centres at its proposed sites in Luggala, County Wicklow and the Boyne Valley, County Louth following the High Court ruling which forbade the building of an interpretative centre at Mullaghmore, County Clare.

The Government has approved an appeal against the High Court judgment in the case of the Mullaghmore Centre to the Supreme Court in order to clarify the application of the Planning Acts to developments by State authorities, including the Commissioners of Public Works, having regard to the conflicting decisions in the Luggala and Mullaghmore cases. The Government also approved the suspension of work on three visitor projects, viz., Luggala, Mullaghmore and the Boyne Valley, pending the outcome of the Supreme Court hearing.

My Department is reviewing the resources it will need, including the co-ordination of existing resources, for the formulation and development of future policy in relation to inland waterways, national parks, wildlife and national monuments and historic properties.
