Vol. 427 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rural Schools.

Liz McManus

Question:

119 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education if she will ensure that the future of the small rural schools will be protected in view of the important role that these schools play in the survival of rural communities.

The optimum size of schools is becoming an increasingly important issue in view of demographic trends and widening curricula. The Green Paper sought to identify the factors involved and to promote a widespread and informed debate. This debate is continuing. The Deputy can be assured that all views and all factors will be taken into account before decisions are reached, including the role of rural schools in community maintenance and development.
