Vol. 427 No. 4

Written Answers. - Waste Licensing.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

46 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to any dumps which are in operation without licences.

Wexford): The administration of waste licensing is the responsibility of the local authorities concerned. My Department is made aware from time to time of particular unauthorised disposal sites and these are brought to the attention of the relevant local authority for appropriate action.

A licence is not at present required by a local authority for the operation of a landfill site. However, it is my intention in the context of the new waste legislation which is being prepared in my Department, to provide for licensing of all waste disposal sites including local authority sites.
