Vol. 427 No. 7

Written Answers. - Teachers' Early Retirement.

Máirín Quill

Question:

174 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education if she will extend early retirement to teachers on the same basis as is currently available to members of the Garda Síochána so that teachers could retire with full pension after 30 years in view of the fact that teaching has in recent times become an extremely stressful occupation; and her views on whether this measure would help to create new jobs in the teaching section.

The three teacher unions have recently submitted a joint claim to the Teachers' Conciliation Council seeking that teachers be entitled to retire from teaching service on a pension from 50 years of age on the basis of accrued pension with 10 years enhancement. It would, therefore, be inappropriate for me to comment on the matter. However, all aspects of the claim including its cost as well as its effects on job creation will need to be fully examined.
