Vol. 427 No. 8

Written Answers. - Redundancy Alternative.

Question:

154 Mr. R. Bruton and Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the plans, if any, he has to legislate to introduce a scheme to provide employers with an alternative to redundancy as promised in the Programme for a Partnership Government 1993-1997; and the Exchequer costs involved.

Discussions will be held with the Social Partners in the near future in the context of the commitment in the Programme for a Partnership Government to implement a scheme aimed at providing employers and employees with alternatives to redundancy where labour cost reduction programmes are sought by companies which have recorded profits in the previous three year period.

It would be premature to presume that legislation will necessarily arise in connection with the commitment in question.
