Vol. 427 No. 8

Written Answers. - Multi-Denominational Schools.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

250 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of the multi-denominational schools which are not yet in permanent premises and have asked her for help in securing premises; and if she will make a statement on the provision of buildings for multi-denominational schools.

The multi-denominational schools which are in temporary accommodation and seeking permanent accommodation are as follows: North Dublin School Project; Ranelagh Multi-denominational School; South Dublin School Project; Kilkenny School Project; Sligo School Project; Cork National School Project; Limerick School Project.

The Deputy will appreciate the overall decline in enrolments in the country means that it is not a rational response to the accommodation needs of schools such as the multi-denominational schools to proceed to new building in each case. Rather is it incumbent on my Department to seek the best use of buildings by arranging where feasible that buildings built for school purposes but no longer needed for the purposes of the particular school for which they were provided should be made available to other schools with accommodation needs.

Subject to implementing this policy where feasible the projects involving the provision of permanent premises for the above schools will continue to be considered for inclusion in the capital programme in the light of available resources and other commitments and priorities.
