Vol. 427 No. 8

Written Answers. - Foynes (Limerick) School.

Michael Noonan

Question:

61 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that pupils will no longer be accepted from September 1993, at the Stella Maris secondary school in Foynes, County Limerick, and to the Sisters of Mercy intention to withdraw from this educational establishment from 1995; and the plans, if any, she has for the continuation of education at this school; if her attention has further been drawn to the uncertainty caused to pupils and parents because of the indecision in defining its future role; and if she will make a statement defining the ongoing role in providing education at this location.

I am aware of the decision taken by the Mercy Sisters to withdraw from the Management of the Stella Maris Secondary School, Foynes, from 1995 and to cease to enrol new pupils from September 1993.

The question of how best to accommodate in the future the pupils who would formerly have enrolled in the Convent is under examination in my Department at present. In view of the urgency of the case, I have asked that this examination be completed as soon as possible.
