Vol. 427 No. 8

Written Answers. - Cursaí Chomhrá Programme.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

62 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Education if she intends to revise the cursaí chomhra programme which is universally acknowledged as sexist; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I accept that the level of sexism and sex-stereotyping in this series is unacceptable, and that the programme should be replaced.

The Primary Curriculum Review Body made certain recommendations regarding Irish in the curriculum, and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) has been requested to advise me, following full consultation with the interested parties, on Irish and all other curriculum areas referred to in the Report.

The Council has been asked to have due regard to equity issues, including gender equity in its deliberations.

I understand that the advice of the NCCA will be available to me at an early date. I will then be in a position to consider the advice and take the necessary decisions.
