Vol. 427 No. 8

Written Answers. - Physical Education in Primary Schools.

John Browne

Question:

94 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Education her views on the importance of physical education at primary school level.

I agree with the importance attached in the Green Paper to the teaching of Physical Education in our primary schools. The approach in the Green Paper places considerable emphasis on this aspect of the curriculum and seeks to achieve a new momentum in Physical Education. In order to achieve this the Paper proposes certain changes in the programme.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment will advise me on a programme which will reflect the approach contained in the Green Paper, while taking account of submissions received on the Green Paper proposals since its issue.
