Question:

196 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice the number of requests received by this State for asylum in 1992; and the number of requests granted.

There were 38 applications for asylum as refugees in 1992. Of that total, one applicant was recognised as a refugee as defined by the 1951 U.N. Convention on the Status of Refugees and was granted asylum. Twelve applicants were refused recognition as refugees but five of those were given leave to remain in the State on other grounds. The remaining applications are under consideration.
