Vol. 428 No. 1

Written Answers. - Meath-Louth Regional Route.

Mary Wallace

Question:

245 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the huge increase in the volume of traffic, especially of heavy vehicles on the regional road from Maynooth, County Kildare to Drogheda, County Louth, which passes through the national primary routes N1, N2, N3 and N4 in recent years and which has been further increased in 1991 with the opening of the Blanchardstown Westlink in Dublin 13 and in 1992 with the Clonee bypass (details supplied); and his views on whether this regional route should be given immediate consideration for upgrading to national secondary status.

The case for upgrading this route to national secondary status has been examined but the conclusion is that reclassification is not warranted because the route does not meet the relevant criteria.

However, with improvements projected on the N1 and N4, and the construction of the Dublin Ring Road, there will be a road connection of motorway standard between Drogheda and Maynooth.
