Vol. 428 No. 1

Written Answers. - Achill (Mayo) Pier.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

281 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Marine when it is proposed to allocate funds to the extension of Darby's Point/Cloughmore pier, Achill, County Mayo; and whether detailed designs and costings have been completed.

The Department of the Marine undertook a site investigation at Darby's Point, Achill, County Mayo, during 1992. The results of this site investigation will be used in the drawing up of designs for any development projects at this pier. Due to ongoing fishery harbour development projects and limited financial resources, it will not be possible to undertake any development works at Darby's Point during 1993.

The Department of the Marine is currently finalising, in the context of the next round of Structural Fund allocations, a Fishery Harbour Development Programme for the 1994 to 1997 period. To this end maritime local authorities, including Mayo County Council, were invited to submit proposals for fishery harbour developments for which they would be willing to make funds available. Mayo County Council included the development of Darby's Point among its proposals. Pending finalisation of the programme and clarification of its funding, I am not in a position to indicate what works, can be undertaken at Darby's Point.
