Vol. 428 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Mayo Piers.

Enda Kenny

Question:

284 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for the Marine if he has received a development plan for piers (details supplied) in County Mayo; if so, if he has examined these proposals; if he will allocate the necessary funding to make these piers serviceable; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Department of the Marine's current Fishery Harbour Development Programme which runs till the end of this year, makes no provision for works at the landing places listed with the exception of Kilcummin Harbour where dredging/clearing of the harbour was required. This dredging was carried out in 1990.

A new development programme for the period 1994 to 1997 is currently being drawn up by the Department of the Marine. Proposals for harbour development works in the fisheries interests were sought from maritime local authorities for possible inclusion in the new programme. Mayo County Council in its submission proposed development works at the following harbours: Darby's Point, Ballyglass Pier, Porturlin Pier, Westport Pier, Blacksod Pier, Inver Pier, Rosmoney Pier, Westport, Royin Pier, Newport, Doohome, Clare Island, Belderrig Pier, Kilcummin Pier, Killala Pier, Newport Pier, Inishturk Pier, Old Head Pier.

Works at these landing places are being examined by the Department of the Marine for possible inclusion in the development programme for the 1994 to 1997 period. Pending finalisation of this programme and clarification of total funding available, I am not in a position to say what funds, if any, can be made available for works at any of the piers listed.
