Séamus Hughes

Question:

479 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for Education when a remedial teacher will be provided for a school (details supplied) in County Mayo; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Liz McManus

Question:

507 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education if she will ensure that the area of south-west Wicklow is given a travelling remedial teacher in view of the welcome allocation of 80 extra remedial teachers with effect from September 1993.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 471, 479 and 507 together.

The Programme for a Partnership Government made a specific commitment to the appointment of 500 additional remedial teachers by September, 1996.

As a first step towards honouring this commitment I have decided to appoint an additional 80 remedial teachers with effect from September, 1993.

These posts will be allocated to individual and groups of schools on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by data collected from schools.

The needs of the schools mentioned by the Deputies will be considered in this context.
