Question:482 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Education if she has any plans to provide supervisors on buses taking children to special schools for mentally handicapped children.
Written Answers. - Transport to Special Schools.
My Department currently meets the return transport costs of escorts for visually impaired children attending St. Joseph's and St. Mary's special schools on a residential basis. This facility can be availed of on up to seven occasions during the year and covers journeys associated with holiday and mid-term breaks.
The Special Education Review Committee is currently examining the range of support services available to children with disabilities and I will be considering what further measures are appropriate in the light of the committee's recommendations.
