Vol. 428 No. 1

Written Answers. - Transport to Special Schools.

John Browne

Question:

482 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Education if she has any plans to provide supervisors on buses taking children to special schools for mentally handicapped children.

My Department currently meets the return transport costs of escorts for visually impaired children attending St. Joseph's and St. Mary's special schools on a residential basis. This facility can be availed of on up to seven occasions during the year and covers journeys associated with holiday and mid-term breaks.

The Special Education Review Committee is currently examining the range of support services available to children with disabilities and I will be considering what further measures are appropriate in the light of the committee's recommendations.
