Question:504 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education when changes in the charging of VAT on school text-books were introduced; and if she will give an estimate of the increase in the cost of texts since that time.

VAT on school text-books was reduced to zero rate with effect from May 1992. The other information sought by the Deputy is not available in my Department.
My Department has engaged a firm of management consultants to examine how the cost of school books can be kept to a minimum. A report is expected before the end of the present school year.
