Vol. 428 No. 1

Written Answers. - Decentralisation Programme.

Donal Carey

Question:

138 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Finance if he has received correspondence from the Kilrush Urban District Council and the Kilrush Enterprise Board, County Clare to combat peripheral disadvantages in their town; and if he will give support for a proposal to decentralise a Government Department to the town in the very near future.

I can confirm that I have received correspondence from Kilrush Urban District Council and the Kilrush Enterprise Board on the question of decentralising a Government Department to Kilrush, County Clare. In addition representations have been passed on to me for attention from the same bodies by the Taoiseach, Deputy Albert Reynolds.

As the Deputy may be aware, the extended programme of decentralisation involves the transfer of parts of eleven Government Departments to nine provincial centres.

I regret very much that Kilrush was not among the centres chosen from the very many locations considered.

While the decentralisation programme is well under way it will take some time to complete and a further extension of the programme is unlikely pending completion and review of the present programme.
