Vol. 428 No. 1

Written Answers. - Howth (Dublin) Peninsula.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

137 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Finance if he will designate the Howth Peninsula as an area of special scientific interest.

Part of the Howth Peninsula has already been identified as an Area of Scientific Interest of national, ecological and geological importance. Under a proposal to formally designate Natural Heritage Areas this site will be included in a survey to assess its suitability for designation. It is expected that the survey will be completed by the end of 1993. If the site qualifies it will be formally designated as a Natural Heritage Area. The Howth Peninsula in its entirety would not qualify for Natural Heritage Area designation, as the designation applies only to natural areas.

The conclusions of the survey will be made public, maps will be published and landowners will be notified.
