Vol. 428 No. 1

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefit.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

163 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Social Welfare the up to date position regarding the appeal of a person (details supplied) in County Kerry against the decision decreasing his unemployment assistance.

The unemployment assistance of the person concerned was reduced from £86.40 to £29.50 with effect from 29 July 1992. The reduction followed a review of his means which were assessed at £86.54, derived from his self employment as an electrician and benefit from his wife's income.

The person concerned appealed the decision to the independent social welfare appeals office. Following an oral hearing on 3 February 1993 an appeals officer reduced the means assessment to £75.76 which has the effect of qualifying him for a weekly unemployment assistance rate of £53.00, inclusive of dependant allowances in respect of his wife and three children.

The person concerned has been informed of the appeals officer's decision and arrears of unemployment assistance arising from that decision are being issued to him this week.
