Vol. 428 No. 3

Written Answers. - Mayo 5000 Committee.

Enda Kenny

Question:

81 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he will support the Mayo 5000 Committee which has been refused funding for provision of sculptures at particular chosen sites in North Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I was happy to meet a delegation from the Tír Sáile Sculpture Symposium recently and to hear of the imaginative work they are doing. I indicated at this meeting my support both for the Mayo 5000 celebrations and in particular for the Sculpture Trail for County Mayo.

The Deputy will be aware that funds allocated to my Department under the subhead for Arts, Culture and Heritage are primarily for the upkeep and development of the national cultural institutions such as the National Museum and the National Library. Funding for individual artists and projects is the responsibility of An Chomhairle Ealaíon which enjoys statutory independence in the disbursal of its funds.
An Chomhairle have informed me that they have not received any request from the Mayo 5000 Committee for funding for this project and I would, therefore, suggest that they write to An Chomhairle regarding this matter.
The Deputy will also be aware of the recent announcement by the Taoiseach that £150,000 from the Exchequer is being provided to support the varied and comprehensive programme of events planned for Mayo 5000.
