Vol. 428 No. 3

Written Answers. - Illness Categorisation.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

93 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Health if he will include galactosaemia on the list of long term illnesses.

I have no plans for change in respect of the illnesses included under the long-term illness scheme.

Many persons with long term illnesses such as galactosaemia are entitled to medical cards which entitles them to free medical care including free prescribed drugs.

Other persons who are certified as having a long term medical condition, with continuing requirement for prescribed medication, are eligible under the drug cost subsidisation scheme and their expenditure in any month is limited to £32.
