Written Answers. - AIDS Prevention.

John Bruton

Question:

99 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education her views on the recommendation of the Second Commission on the Status of Women that an age-appropriate educational strategy for AIDS prevention should be taught in schools.

My Department issued teaching resource materials aimed at the 14-18 age group to all post-primary schools. An evaluation of the use of these materials is currently being completed. My Department is at present engaged in discussions with the Department of Health in regard to appropriate material aimed at younger children.

Discussions are also being held with the Department of Health on the provision of guidelines for schools in regard to infectious diseases, including HIV.
