Vol. 428 No. 3

Written Answers. - Equal Opportunities in Sport.

John Bruton

Question:

98 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education her views on the recommendation of the Second Commission on the Status of Women that the adoption and implementation of a proposed code of conduct for equal opportunities in sport should be a criterion for deciding on eligibility for national lottery and other public funding.

My Department's sports policy is aimed at promoting increased participation in sport generally, including participation by women at all levels. Since 1991, following a recommendation from the Commission on the Status of Women contained in its First Statement to Government the right of women to apply for full membership of sport bodies and clubs has been one of the criteria applied to applications for grant-aid.

Consideration is being given to the recent recommendation of the Second Commission on the Status of Women that a code of conduct be prepared for equal opportunities in sport which sports organisations would be invited to adopt.
