Vol. 429 No. 3

Written Answers. - Prison Remission.

Joe Costello

Question:

116 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Justice if she will increase the remission granted to prisoners who are of good behaviour from 25 per cent of sentence to 33? per cent to bring the Irish remission system into line with the norm in Europe, so as to reduce overcrowding in prisons and to limit the revolving door system of release.

I am at present reviewing policy in relation to the operation of the prisons. The level of remission granted to prisoners for good conduct will form part of that review. I will make a further announcement when my review is completed.
