Vol. 429 No. 3

Written Answers. - Broadcasting Licences.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

214 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the number of broadcasting licences which have been issued by the Independent Radio and Television Commission since 1989.

I understand from the Independent Radio and Television Commission that the number of sound broadcasting contracts awarded since 1989 is as follows: National Radio, (Now ceased operations), 1; Local Radio, 26 (Following a number of mergers, there are 21 stations operational at present); Community Radio/Special Interest, 1.

In addition, the commission has selected an operator for an Irish language special interest station in Dublin. The commission has also entered into sound broadcasting contracts in respect of three institutional radio stations and 22 special event/temporary stations under section 8 of the Radio and Television Act, 1988.
