Vol. 429 No. 3

Written Answers. - Primary Schools Book Scheme.

Chris Flood

Question:

243 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for Education if she has any plans to review the operation of the new book scheme for primary schools in view of the fact that many children are likely to lose out from benefiting through this scheme when sudden financial crisis arise for families.

The grant scheme for school books for needy pupils is under review at present and discussions have taken place with the education partners.

The present arrangements include a provision whereby principals retain discretion to respond to cases of real need from within the grant provided to the school. It is intended also that any new arrangements will contain such a provision.
