Question:242 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the provision of an athletic track and regional athletic centre for County Sligo; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

No proposals have been received by my Department for the provision of an athletic track and regional athletic centre for County Sligo.
Under a scheme approved by Government, grants have been allocated from the proceeds of the national lottery for the provision of regional and local sports centres at specified locations throughout the country, including £1.2 million for the Sligo swimming pool project. The funds available under this scheme are fully committed. Consequently, it is not possible to consider the allocation of a grant for any new developments.
In the event of additional funds being allocated for the provision of such facilities the needs of the Sligo region will be considered.
