Question:

150 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Defence if he will transfer the married quarters at Fort Camden and the coastguard houses in Crosshaven to Cork County Council so that they can be refurbished and used as local authority housing.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 13 and 150 together. The following properties in County Cork are presently in process of sale:—

Eighteen acres at Murphy Barracks, Ballincollig; The Caretakers Cottage, Ballincollig; four and a half acres approximately at Fort Camden; five houses at Bere Island.

Negotiations are in train for the sale of the former FCA site at Aghabullouge. It is proposed to sell an area of two acres at Mitchelstown by public tender in the near future.

As I indicated in reply to Question No. 105 on 24 March 1993 the Office of Public Works propose to sell ten of the 12 houses at the Coastguard Station, Crosshaven. The remaining two, which comprise the Garda Station and a garda residence, are being retained. Five of the houses are allocated to serving members of the Permanent Defence Force.

Consideration is at present being given to the interest expressed by Cork County Council in acquiring the Department's remaining lands at Fort Camden, which comprise seven acres together with 14 former married quarters.
