Vol. 429 No. 3

Written Answers. - UN Force in Cyprus.

Seán Barrett

Question:

16 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for Defence if the Cypriot authorities have requested Ireland to send more observers to serve with the UN force in Cyprus; and if he will give details of the number already serving and the cost to this country of performing this most important role.

No such request has been received. The United Nations Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus is under the command of Major-General Michael Minehane and nine other Irish military personnel are serving with the Force. The annual nett extra cost of participation in UNFICYP is approximately £104,000. Normal pay and allowances amount to a further £174,000.
