Vol. 429 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fisheries Controls.

Mary Harney

Question:

59 Miss Harney asked the Minister for the Marine the current position regarding EC proposals on fisheries controls.

A Commission proposal for a new Council regulation governing the control and monitoring of sea fishing is at present under consideration. In general, the proposal provides for more stringent monitoring of fishing and related activities and envisages a more active role for the Commission.

An initial examination of this proposal took place at the Fisheries Council on 18 March when certain guidelines with regard to the future consideration of the proposal at council working groups were agreed. It is hoped that the detailed examination of the matter will be advanced sufficiently to allow for the adoption of a new regulation at the Fisheries Council scheduled for 24 June next.
