Vol. 429 No. 5

Written Answers. - National Anthem.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

26 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance his views on whether the words of our national anthem are appropriate to a society which ought to promote non-violence, tolerance and co-operation; and when it is proposed to introduce a less antagonistic anthem.

Our National Anthem, "The Soldier's Song", was adopted in 1926, almost 70 years ago. The words of the anthem can be seen as a reflection of a particular time in this State's history arising out of our quest for independence. In so far as I am aware, the question of a change of anthem is not an issue which is of general concern at the present time.
