Vol. 429 No. 6

Written Answers. - Game Angling.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

173 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Marine his view as to whether there is major potential in game angling for job creation; and the proposals, if any, he has to ensure that there are adequate numbers of salmon and sea trout in our rivers.

There is good potential in game angling for job creation and this was reflected in the Inland Fisheries Development Programme submitted by the Central and Regional Fisheries Boards last August. This programme was incorporated into the Department of the Marine's submission for Structural Funding for the period 1994-1997.

The protection of salmon and sea trout stocks is by law a matter for the Central and Regional Fisheries Boards under the fisheries legislation. To augment their efforts each year the Naval Service are requested to provide naval vessels to patrol the fishing areas.
