Vol. 429 No. 6

Written Answers. - Smoking Legislation.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

283 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Health if he has satisfied himself that existing legislation in relation to smoking is being implemented fully; if he intends to introduce further legislation to reduce smoking; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There is a wide body of legislation which imposes a broad range of prohibitions and restrictions on tobacco consumption, advertising — both as regards quantity, placing and content thereof — and sponsorship of events by tobacco companies. There are also restrictions on price in order to prohibit price decreases which could stimulate demand.

I am satisfied that in general the existing legislation is operating satisfactorily which can be seen in the continuing reduction in levels of tobacco consumption in this country.

I can assure the Deputy that any future proposals to introduce further legislation to reduce tobacco consumption will be discussed with the relevant interested parties in advance.
