Vol. 429 No. 6

Written Answers. - Criminal Injuries Compensation.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

93 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice the steps, if any, she proposes to take to reduce the delay in making payments awarded by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal.

The matter of additional funding for the Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal to permit earlier payment of awards of compensation is kept under constant review in my Department. As in the case of all public services, funding for criminal injuries compensation has to be allocated on the basis of requirement, competing demands for other services and for the limited financial resources available and the overall budgetary situation. Awards of compensation made under the scheme are paid as quickly as possible within the resources available.
